How the 20% discount and THERAPY20 work
Online-Therapy.com's FAQ is clear: it says it doesn't issue promo codes or coupons. Instead, it currently applies a 20% discount to your first month automatically in its checkout. Its partner program also says people who join through a partner link get 20% off their first month.
THERAPY20 is the code we were given through that partner program. In practice:
- Go to Online-Therapy.com and answer the short sign-up questions.
- Pick a plan. At checkout, look for the 20% first-month discount on your total.
- If there's a code box and the discount isn't already showing, enter THERAPY20.
- Before you pay, check the first-month price matches the table below.
The discount only covers your first month. From your second billing date, you pay the regular price for your plan unless you get financial aid (more on that below). You can't stack it with other offers to get more than 20% off. Whatever happens, you shouldn't pay more than the regular rate.
Online-Therapy.com plans and prices
| Plan | Live sessions | First month (20% off) | After first month |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | None. Messaging and the therapy program only | $48/week | $60/week |
| Standard | One 45-minute session a week | $72/week | $90/week |
| Premium | Two 45-minute sessions a week | $96/week | $120/week |
| Couples | One 45-minute couples session a week | $96/week | $120/week |
Prices are shown per week but charged monthly. A month is a little over four weeks, so your monthly charge will be a bit more than four times the weekly price. The checkout page shows the exact amount before you pay. Online-Therapy.com also says it only offers monthly plans at the moment, so you can't prepay for longer at a lower rate.
What's included in every plan
According to Online-Therapy.com, every plan, Basic included, comes with:
- A dedicated therapist and unlimited messaging with them, Monday to Friday. It says replies usually come within 24 hours on weekdays.
- An 8-section program based on cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), including 25 worksheets, with daily worksheet replies on weekdays.
- A journal, an activity plan, tests to track progress, and yoga and meditation videos.
On Standard, Premium and Couples, live sessions can be by video, voice or messaging, whichever you prefer. You book them from your dashboard, and they take place in your web browser. You can also use a nickname with your therapist if you'd like more privacy, though it asks for emergency contact details.
Which plan? Basic is the only plan without live sessions. If talking to someone in real time matters to you, Standard is the cheapest plan that includes it. You can upgrade or downgrade later.
How billing, cancelling and refunds work
- Recurring monthly charge. If you sign up on the 11th, your next charge is on the 11th of the next month, unless you cancel first.
- No minimum commitment. Online-Therapy.com says you can cancel any time from your subscription page and keep any days you've already paid for.
- Pause instead of cancel. When you click cancel, you're offered a 1 to 4 week pause. You aren't charged during the pause, and your renewal date moves back by the same amount.
- Refunds are case by case. You need to ask within 90 days of the charge. Sessions that took place, missed sessions, sessions cancelled less than 24 hours ahead, and messaging that already happened aren't refundable.
- How it shows on your statement. Card payments usually appear as "WWW.ONLINE-THERAPY.COM", and PayPal payments as "PAYPAL". It accepts major credit and debit cards and PayPal.
Insurance and other ways to cut the cost
Online-Therapy.com doesn't accept direct insurance payments. It gives you itemized receipts for every payment, which you can send to your insurer to ask for reimbursement. Ask your insurer whether it covers online therapy before you start, because plans vary a lot.
If cost is the main barrier, Online-Therapy.com says students, veterans and people on a low income can click "Apply for financial aid" at checkout. It says applications are processed automatically and, if you're approved, the new price shows straight away.
If you'd rather use your insurance directly, see Brightside on our therapy page. It says it accepts most major insurance plans.
Who Online-Therapy.com isn't for
- Anyone in crisis. Online-Therapy.com says that if you're having suicidal thoughts, or symptoms that seriously affect your safety or others', you should get help offline straight away and not use the site. In the US, call or text 988, or call 911 in an emergency.
- People who want medication. Its therapists can't prescribe. It suggests seeing a psychiatrist or your primary care provider.
- Under-18s on their own. It's built for adults. Teenagers need consent from both parents, sent by email, before starting.
- People who want insurance to pay up front. You pay first and claim afterwards, if your plan allows it.
Tips before you sign up
- Note your renewal date. The first-month discount ends on your second billing date.
- Start with the plan you'll actually use. You can upgrade if you want more live time.
- Ask your insurer about out-of-network reimbursement, and keep your receipts.
- Check whether your employer offers free therapy sessions through an Employee Assistance Program before you pay.
